    Sam advanced on the pile, gun still at the ready. The voice had gone silent, but Sam knew there must be something in the heap of cardboard.

    He put his gun back in his waist holster, and instead used his hand to sweep the top box off of the pile.

    As soon as he did, piercing yellow eyes shot back up at him.

    Sam felt his heart skip a beat, momentarily taken aback by the sight in front of him.

    A bird. It looked like some kind of hawk, brown wings and tail, maybe a foot and a half in length. It was lying down a little awkwardly, the feathers on one of its wings looking oddly ruffled.

    “You can hear me.” The same voice that called out for help asked, and Sam looked around, trying to find the source, only to see absolutely nobody near.

    OR: After a mission-gone-sideways, Sam is recovering and dealing with the aftermath, the extent of which he doesn't realize until he comes across an injured hawk that he can communicate with.

    Summary

    It begins where it ends.

    A very long time ago, a god failed to kill a madman.

    In the time after, the Avengers worked tirelessly to find Thanos and kill him. Thor did all he could, but one thing soon became very clear: they would not be able to kill Thanos without Loki's help. Thor then created a spell, impossibly powerful and of incredible, unimaginable magnitude, that allowed him to bring his brother back and to manipulate time and space to give him a chance to right his great wrong.

    He knows that Loki is their only chance. Thor will do, and has done, whatever it takes to give them the opportunity to kill Thanos. But he has been driven mad by his spell and what he has done to Loki has warped him beyond recognition.

    Loki will live in Thor's shadow no longer.

    EXCERPT:

    A goose had matched Sam with Riley while they were both jogging.

    A talking falcon was currently matching Sam with an infamous murderer right after the man stole Sam’s steering wheel while he was still driving the car.

    “Dearly beloveds, it is time for you to join as a pair!” Sam heard before he saw a falcon with the height of one and a half Subway sandwiches and the wingspan of a small child fucking wreck the Winter Soldier.

    Just.

    Brutally dig his claws into the Soldier’s shoulder as he stabbed the Soldier in the forehead with his beak hard enough to draw blood. The Soldier, understandably surprised, lost his balance and took the steering wheel with him as he fell back onto the street.

    “Wrong way, good sir!” cawed the intense falcon as Sam felt the Winter Soldier’s body like a speed bump under the car, “Your mate is up here!”

    Then the falcon turned to Sam.

    “Nope,” said Sam, shaking his head furiously, “No, no, no. Do not come near me. Take Steve or Nat. No thank you.”
