The cow at Merlin’s side begins munching on the heads of his handful of wheat.
“Oh, I see," he says, "You’re an oaf."
“What did you call me?”
“An oaf. A pumpkin short of its seeds. A turnip with no greens or roots.”
“How dare you.”
“Quite plainly, I thought, but I suppose given your intelligence or lack thereof, I might have been more direct the first time.”
Arthur draws himself up to his full height, aghast.
“You,” he says. “Are the strangest, most repulsive hatchling I have ever met, and I should like nothing more than to escape your company immediately.”

“I want to go home,” Merlin chokes.
“Come home,” Arthur beseeches him, stretching his arm as far as he can.
He feels the ghost of heat hovering over his palm. He feels it drawing closer until—

He opens his eyes and finds Emrys poised over him with wide-spread fingers and bared teeth.
“No,” Emrys says again, this time to Arthur’s face.(Splintered Merlin AU. In a fit of terror, Arthur kills Merlin and regrets everything immediately. Two years later, he gets a chance to make things right when a man calling himself Emrys wanders back into his closest circle. Arthur thinks that he can make Merlin come back to him if only he treats this Emrys the way he should have treated Merlin. Emrys, meanwhile, isn't interested in alleviating Arthur's guilt. He wants to play out his own fairytale; the problem is that there's a dragon in the way.)

“You know what sucks, Pete?” Tony says, “Watchin’ a kid you’ve known since he was fifteen fading away in front of your very eyes.”
“Stop lookin’ then,” Peter says.
Just like Dr. Johnson, Tony can’t resist Peter’s innate charm. He looks away to hide his smirk and turns back once he’s gotten ahold of himself.
“You need social interaction; everyone’s saying you’re isolating. That’s not gonna fly and you know it, so here’s your choice,” he says. “The Torch or Osborn?”
“Osborn,” Peter says.
“You forgive like a saint, Mr. Parker.”
“Save it for confession, Mr. Stark.”
(Peter loses his powers and, having stretched the limits of his body for years as Spiderman, ends up trapped in a cycle of dying and being brought back to life by the dregs of his healing factor. He needs help, but he doesn't know who to turn to when everyone, everywhere seems to be trying to save him.)

(Uther, desperately lonely after sending Arthur away to become a knight, manipulates Balinor into giving him Merlin to keep as his pet dragonlord. Balinor, furious at having been tricked a second time, joins a rising resistance to Uther's rule. When Arthur comes home, he falls in love with his father’s strange ward and in doing so unwittingly ignites a war.)

Ed swipes his finger through a line of rhino dust and saunters back to Izzy. “All the more reason to have a hit.” He circles Izzy languidly, finger held out in mock invitation. “It’ll perk you back up in a jiffy.”
He stops circling in front of Izzy, eyes blown wide and dark. “Open your mouth, dog.” It’s not a suggestion.'

'“I just wanted to thank you for–” is all Izzy gets out before Bonnet turns and spears him with a look so odious it burns.
And still, it’s less than he deserves, less than he got from Ed so close to the end.
The crew, none the wiser, ham it up or go about their tasks with all the enthusiasm of a second chance at life. Unable to do either, Izzy upends his mop crutch and does his best to clear the deck of splintered wood and crusted salt and gunpowder.
“Hey, no, no, no.” Fang nags his efforts, dumping armfuls of rotten wood onto Izzy’s tiny pile of dust. “We’ve got this sorted, boss. You get some rest.”
Izzy doesn’t argue. Just limps without thinking and winds up in the same place as always, standing outside of that low door. No longer concealed, it hangs ajar and lit from within, Bonnet’s lantern flickering as he weeps.'
