Summary
There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.
-Edith WhartonFive years before the end of the Hundred Year War, Prince Lu Ten was killed in the 600 Day Siege of Ba Sing Se. The story Iroh II knew was slightly different but the fact remains the same - Lu Ten died.
Now it's seventy-five years after the Hundred Year War and Iroh II, along with Republic City Detective Mako, are being sent on the journey of a life time to the past of an alternate dimension by the spirits. In order to make the jump, they had to give up their firebending but the spirits had a few tricks up their sleeves.
Now, five years before the end of the Hundred Year War, Prince Lu Ten was nearly assassinated in the 600 Day Siege of Ba Sing Se. He was saved by a waterbender and earthbender who held history changing information and opportunity. Regardless, the fact remains the same - Lu Ten lived. So, what's to be done about that?
Well, a lot really.

This technically isn't a cross-over, as it contains no spoilers, plot points, or characters, from His Dark Materials, and only borrows its premise to be integrated into the Avatar storyline.
Each work can be read as stand alone, though Birds, Yesterday, and Rise Up serve as the official 'prequels' that will offer the most extensive backstory to the main members of the Gaang and support the plot of the other pieces.

Summary
What is TLF?
While the original intention of TLF was to retell Distorted Reality with some mild adjustments, it has in the meantime transformed and evolved into being its own thing. For one, all of my chapters, or episodes, follow the 3-act-structure of a television series, much like the original show, though TLF is much longer in comparison. I also have a very unique writing style that is very similar to a screenplay, while also including a lot of important elements from traditional novel writing. It's probably not for everyone, but oh well.
What can you expect?
If you're the kind of person that dislikes fanfiction if characters don't act exactly like they do in the source material, this is probably not for you. My goal here is to tell a story that builds on the original show, takes influence from DR, but also just manages to exist on its own. If you're a fan of the idea of heading into an almost entirely new adventure with lots of fun character moments, action scenes, new locations and set pieces, romance, LGBTQ+ representation, and a story that builds up slowly towards a big finale, then you might want to check it out.

I'm surprised I haven't bookmarked this. All the ATLA characters are timeline swapped! What I really like about it is that the characterization is done very well, their personalities fit the scenario correctly. Especially the Toph and Katara dynamic.

Summary
Zuko flees from his father at eight years old, and winds up with no memory of his past. Jet rescues him and they grow up together, founding the Freedom Fighters.
As Zuko (Li) gets older, Jet becomes more of the leader while Zuko tends to the children more. Eventually, they have a child of their own and they can no longer live in the woods.
After moving to Ba Sing Se, the small family of three run into Iroh, disguised as “Mushi.” He guides them through the city with the secret intention of protecting them.
With her long lost brother wanted by her father in addition to her traitorous uncle, Azula plans to bring them back. However, she makes a deal with Jet, who has the trust of someone even more important to her: The Avatar.

Summary
Ursa never knew Ozai planned to kill Zuko until it was almost too late. In the midst of his attack, Zuko manages to escape as far as his little legs could take him- onto a fire nation ship as a stowaway.
While on the run, Zuko hits his head hard enough to get amnesia. No longer knowing his actual name nor his bending abilities, ‘Li’ is saved by Jet, another boy his age residing in the forest.
