Thousands upon thousands of years she’d known her husband, and not once had she seen him cry. She traced the lines that creased his furrowed brow, chased the tears that slid from his shuttered eyes. Her lips followed, claiming the glittering jewels for their own, mapping tear-tracks from eye-to-jaw as her fingertips fluttered at his temples.
“Team effort, darlin’” she murmured against that pale skin. “We two, we know how to make it hurt.”

Suddenly, they stood in a pool of light. Orpheus looked at Eurydice, who was smiling even more brightly than the sunlight that gently tumbled down her shoulders.
“Sunlight,” she said, breathless. “How? How can you call the sunlight down here?”
The melody trailed off, and the light and warmth faded. “I don’t know,” Orpheus said. “Maybe when the Lady came to the underworld, she brought the sunlight here, too.”
“And when she up and left,” Hermes said, staring grimly at them both, “it left along with her.”
