    Of course, with that being his usual modus operandi, there are a few exceptions. Like when Kaito stops just short of the wall and spots Amami Rantaro sitting on the ground and nursing a black eye.

    Kaito’s not a nosy person. But he does quicken his pace, creasing his brow and coming to a stop in front of Rantaro, where he takes a knee and leans in to examine it. Rantaro blinks, as though startled by Kaito’s arrival, but doesn’t lean away—perhaps in part because there’s nowhere fore him to go, he’s already sitting against the wall—as his expression quickly relaxes into a smile.

    “Ah, hey. Yeah, it’s pretty ugly, huh?”

    Kaito doesn’t really want to hear it. He takes Rantaro’s wrist to pull his hand away from the bruise, frowning at it for a moment longer. “Who did this?”

    “Would you believe it if I said I walked into a door?” Rantaro’s tone is lighthearted, almost as though he’s holding back a chuckle. As if this is funny. Kaito’s frown deepens and Rantaro exhales, now averting his gaze.
