    PART 1

In the darkest night where there are no stars, wolves howl in the silent moonlight. A blizzard, two armies and one man. A chance encounter changes the lives of Sansa and her siblings forever.

Forced to live in the forest after the Boltons invaded Winterfell, they survive each day in the extreme temperatures as homeless orphans. One day, a foreign army arrives in the harsh northern lands and with it, the name of a new king.

    Summary

There must always be a Stark in Winterfell, and Sansa Stark is ready to heed her father's words. Too bad the castle is in ruins with a bad infestation of fowl-mouthed, ill-tempered not-knights. What's a girl to do?

After her parents' death, Sansa has finally returned to the North to escape an abusive relationship and put her ghosts to rest. She's ready to take her family's gigantic ruined castle and make something of the place. Meanwhile, Sandor Clegane (and his horse) has been squatting in Winterfell with the permission of Sansa's estranged sister Arya. When he finds out that Sansa's the actual heiress, he has to figure out a plan that will allow him to stay and allow his LARPing group, the Brotherhood Without Banners, to keep using the grounds. The deal: Sandor will help Sansa fix up the castle for room and board. Too bad neither of them counted on a wolf pack, psychotic ex, conniving lawyer, feisty little sister, mysterious half-brother, bus full of Free Folk and bonafide ghost to turn up!

Ned blinks. His vision has been swimming for a while now, but it’s really blurry now. Oh, he’s crying. Gods wept.

    Before 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕮𝖔𝖓𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖘𝖙

Before dragon-riders even graced the mainland, Ned had not expected the Sorrowful Man, the dreams, or the Gardener prince attending at his bedside.

Tobirama, though, had been there since the dawn.

"Just looking at the people who turned out to wave farewell and wish safe travels when the Titan’s Daughter set out, was enough to remind Ned that Tobirama’s legend was so established, Lord Manderly had mentioned that followers of the Seven had asked if the Warrior’s statue should be… edited. The man himself refused, thus saving the North from potential religious debate."

"“What a relief,” said Ned, “that the Faceless are now paid to kill anyone after my life rather than come after my own life.”

“Thank you. It took a while to wrangle them into providing additional security,” Tobirama ignored the sarcasm either by true ignorance or selective hearing. "

She imagined she felt his eyes on her throughout the dinner but hadn’t once turned to look, unsure what she feared more: being right or being wrong. She has hardly seen him since that day in the training yard, when that strange energy crackled between them. And now she feels Cregan’s gaze almost like a physical touch, pulling at her. Pulling at the threads of her until she may unravel completely. Then the pressure of Cregan’s eyes falls away and Nettles finds she can breathe a bit easier.

Nettles wills him to turn away. He does not and goes further, holding his hand out to her.

“Dance with me.” Now she has a reason to touch him, she cannot help but think as all noise is muted. Something about him is different from when they last met. He seems determined, resolute. Thus he was in the training yard. No, it is her who is different, too many thoughts to corral, too many stray feelings which coalesce into a mass too big to be swerved. She will miss him when she leaves. She must have some happy memories, she thinks again. Something to take with her, to lead her through whatever comes next. Nettles takes his hand, his callouses sending a pleasurable shiver through her. Her hands are no less chapped and yet he holds hers in his as if it were petal-soft as any lady’s. Sound rushes back like a wave towards the sea, cresting around her.

“I hope you’re prepared, my lord. Your poor feet.”

“I can handle more than you credit me, Mistress.”

“If you say so,” She feels light with something. Nerves. It’s foolish to be nervous.

Or is it? she ponders as she notes the eyes on them while they take their positions upon the floor, eyes she hadn’t felt when she danced with Torghen. She almost wants to do something to justify their avid gazes.

A gentle press to her hand draws her eyes to Cregan. “Look at me, not them. Or your feet.” A smile curves the side of Cregan’s mouth, something warm in his gaze. A warmth which touches her too, as if she walks through flames. “The first time I saw you, I thought you were a Child of the Forest. I thought you’d revealed yourselves to me at last; the sole flight of fancy I engaged in as a boy, come alive before my very eyes — but long after I had stopped believing you were still here, long enough to make me feel vindicated and irked in equal measure. I could not mistake you now. Eyes on me,” Cregan says again, barely above a breath as he moves with her across the floor, his body almost flush with hers, both guide and distraction. Are the other dancers as close or is it just them?

“I’ll fall flat on my face.”

His next words make her swallow, her throat tight. “I will not let you fall.”

The courtiers of the south have never been half as earnest as this unsparing northern lord. The pretence is starting to feel a little too real. “You could.” Those southron courtiers would have if it meant a reemergence of the world order they knew; those like Nettles kissing the ground beneath their feet, not soaring above their heads on beasts of destruction.

“I will not.” All the solemnness of a lord swearing an oath. Her skin tingles where he touches her, where he is rubbing his thumb against hers, she recognises dimly. He only said he wouldn’t let you fall; he ain’t proposed marriage. And now she’s thought it, she cannot undo the floodgates, the collapse of the dam she’d built over the past few days to hold back all fleeting suspicions before they might form into hopes and dreams she could get drunk upon, feast upon. There is no feast for her here.

      “And what’s that look for?”

“You are flustered by it.” A smile quirks his mouth briefly as if he cannot help himself. Her stomach plummets. “I did not mean it as insult. It is… rare, in such ways, for a woman to be flustered by my manner and not unnerved or some such.” He smooths a hand over his hair idly. “I…”

Damn him, she thinks now. Damn him for doing this to her, for looking at her like that, for making her feel as if she were reclining upon the shore warmed by the summer sun. His look, his touch, his gaze, his entire being like home. He has no right to make her feel like this. He cannot be her home. He doesn’t want her. He can’t possibly. He…

Someone clears his throat beside her. She jumps. Cregan doesn’t, passing his thumb over her knuckles as easy as breathing, as if to soothe her. He looks coolly at Osric who is smirking at him for all the world like an elder brother, and not a vassal.

“You had just stopped,” Osric says.

      “The dance is done.”

“Do not think you can fool me, old friend; I know you stopped before then. Is all well?” His tone is too innocent.

“More than.” Cregan looks back to her. “Mistress Nettles… You once said I was missing something very fine indeed… That’s not true. It hasn’t been for some time.” He bows over her hand in farewell, raising her knuckles to his mouth.

But he had been under their sight since he was old enough to understand death, when his father took him to witness an execution - a rapist having his throat slit by a dagger of bone and dragonglass, the blood dripping from the open wound on the ground and on the roots of an old heart-tree, its mouth open in a scream of anguish, but its eyes angry and vengeful, witness to justice and vengeance.
