Merlin’s lips parted. But no words got past them.
He hacked instead. It sounded wet, too weak for a man that was full of strength just this very morning.
As much as Arthur wanted to hate and question everything about his friend, something in his chest squeezed when Merlin gasped for air, slamming his hand on his chest as if trying to command his lungs work.
Before Arthur could even utter a word, Merlin collapsed on the spot, his head making a threatening thud with the cold, stone floor it was met with.
"Oh, your beloved servant." The sorcerer chuckled, making his way over to Merlin. "The legend of Emrys himself. We'll see how long it takes for you to turn on him." He smiled back threateningly at Arthur, pulling Merlin's head up by the hair.

Merlin really dies this time. And only then those two silly, oblivious idiots find their way to eachother.

When Leon discovered Merlin's magic the night before the battle of Camlann, he whole-heartedly expected to be struck down by the god of magic that had apparently been living amongst the people of Camelot for years. Please remember mental illness wasn't really acknowledged in this era. They didn't have a word for depression or a diagnosis like nowadays, but people felt that common ground of low mood, they would have somewhat known it existed.

Summary
Merlin has wanted Arthur for many years, it’s hard to know when it started, he had never intended for Arthur to find out the truth, and even when Arthur reciprocated, he managed to ruin everything.
It would take at least six rolls of parchment for Merlin to list every reason Arthur can’t be with him, most are fairly obvious reasons. But Merlin finds himself - himself! - slowly strikeing each reason off the list.
A hot and bothered and messy pandemonium ensues.
