Because his life isn't the plot of a romcom, it wasn't the moment he met Merlin at a Freshers Week party, got in a fight with him, and subsequently threw up on his shoes. No, the moment his life really went to shit was the day Gwen and Lance got together and broke the pact they had all made four years ago to date outside their group of friends. As Court Sorcerer, Merlin has to go with Gwaine on a diplomatic mission that will see him spend three months meeting with druids and queens. Three long months away from Camelot. Three long months away from Arthur.
Fortunately, being a sorcerer has its perks. And thanks to a certain magical crystal, he and Arthur are able to stay in touch for those three months, managing to stay close despite being apart.

Which left Merlin to pick up the pieces of the kingdom’s most recent drama, like always, and fit them together again, even if it wasn’t his fault. And it seemed like the only way he could fix things was by chipping off bits of himself to replace the tidbits that got lost in the fight.
Or, the aftermath of Lancelot du Lac. Gwen is banished, Lancelot is dead (again), Arthur and Merlin find comfort in each other (eventually).

Arthur is the prince of the kingdom and not happy with his father’s ideas of keeping their (royal) distance. He wants to be part of the action and show that he cares about the people of the kingdom by doing more than giving speeches and looking good at charity events.
