In the fall, the Deku Serpents get much more aggressive, with much more pointed goals when they catch someone. Ordon Village is just used to it, so much so that Link didn't even think twice about heading out after visiting home on his way back from retrieving the Master Sword... but some mistakes only have to happen once.
This is not the first time Link's made this 'mistake,' however. He knows what will happen, and what to expect, and Midna -- thank all the Spirits -- trusts he knows what he's doing... even if this is the biggest Deku Serpent he's run into this time of year.
