Please remember mental illness wasn't really acknowledged in this era. They didn't have a word for depression or a diagnosis like nowadays, but people felt that common ground of low mood, they would have somewhat known it existed.

They went from snarky roommates to inseparable friends, despite their differences, and Merlin started to wonder why being with Arthur made him feel so different than with all his other friends. Unfortunately, when Arthur left for Hollywood, and Merlin's own career took off, they slowly lost touch. Now, Merlin is a world-famous virtuoso and Arthur comes back to London with some surprising news...and a lot of feelings.

“You know,” Arthur says, his tone softer now, sadness bleeding through. “Sometimes, I don’t think you believe me when I say that I love you.”
“What?” Merlin rears back, the words landing like a physical blow.
"I just don’t understand, Merlin. I try to, I swear, I do but it’s just--why do you think you taking care of me and me taking care of you are two entirely different things. You do things for me because you love me, so why can’t I do the same thing for you for the same reason?”
And here’s the thing, Merlin wants to answer that question logically. He knows he should have a definitive reason but he can’t for the life of him figure out what it is because Arthur’s making too much sense. Why is he so adamant it’s different?

Every time Arthur calls him useless, daft, an idiot, a clumsy oaf, Merlin takes it. He listens to him, believes him. Because he always believes Arthur. Because he listens to him even when the king thinks otherwise. Because after hearing something enough times, you eventually start believing it. Sometimes Merlin wonders why he doesn't simply sack him. Why he puts up with him every day. He tells himself it’s because destiny makes sure they stay together long enough for it to be completed, but he doesn't want to believe it. He doesn't want to think that's the only reason. He wants Arthur to at least care about him. At least a little. It would be enough for Merlin's gentle little heart.

After we find the fomorrah and kill it, I’m going to let him leave. Maybe he’ll go back to Ealdor, maybe somewhere else.”
Gwaine’s eyes were wide, “Surely, you’re not serious.”
Arthur squeezed his eyes shut. “You’ve always been his.” Gwaine looked a little like child who had been caught doing something he shouldn’t, but he said nothing while Arthur continued. “Your loyalty has always been to him. Can I ask you this one last thing? Go with him, wherever he goes, I can’t bear the thought of him being hurt.”
“He will be safe here,” Gwaine said, softly.
“But will he be happy?”

Uther who never would have agreed to this, Uther who would be ashamed of the man he’s become.Arthur needs this to be mutual. He needs Merlin to fight for this just as much as him because if he doesn’t, he’s not sure how long he can withstand it.

“What’s Merlin up to, Gaius?”
Gaius isn’t listening. His eyes are wide and horrified but suddenly focused on something behind him, something outside of the window.
Before the knights can turn around to catch it, the door flies open yet again. The force behind it so strong that it nearly falls off it’s hinges.
Familiar eyes meet his own.
Merlin’s eyes.
Merlin is back, coming right through the door.
But he isn’t walking. He’s falling through the door and landing on the hard floor before Gwaine can even register what’s happening.
“Merlin?” Sir Leon rushes to his side, his voice quiet.
Merlin is right in front of him. Blood soaked and filthy. Covered scrapes and bruises. Crying out for no one in particular.
And it’s the most battered Gwaine has seen him.
(Or, Merlin disappears without explanation, leaving Gwaine worried to death.
Luckily, the sorcerer returns.
Beaten and battered.)
