They don't even know about the rumors until someone tells them. To keep Merlin's magic a secret, they play along with the gossip and accidentally start developing real feelings. While everyone is obsessed with their supposed romance, they completely miss the dark sorcerer Merlin is battling right under their noses. Lancelot is just there to support Merlin through it all.

"Uh, maybe not set something on fire?" Gwen quickly interrupted with a frown.
"I'm on Gwen with this one," Merlin said apologetically.
"But Merlin! We haven't set anything on fire this past two weeks!"
Merlin winced. "Actually… Lancelot and I already set something on fire."
Gwaine pouted with resentment. "Oh, sorry. I should have known that you preferred Lancelot over me."
"I don't! I like you both equally!"
Gwaine turned away from him, crossing his arms.
Merlin shared an exasperated look with Gwen. "Look," Merlin said. "We didn't actually mean to set anything on fire. So you really can't base your statement over that."
Gwaine turned back to him with glee. "So does that mean you still haven't intentionally set anything else on fire after we burned that old lord's whole underwear drawer two weeks ago?"
"I suppose so."
Gwaine snapped his fingers. "That's it. We're going to set something on fire."

Summary
It had never been a question, if Gaius was willing to give his life for the young man he considered the son he never had. That was a question he had already answered back, when Merlin had bargained his life for Arthur's and his mother had come to them, her life fading with her every breath.
The question had only been, if the gods would grant it; if there was a way to do now, what Merlin had averted then.
Gaius looked back down at the book in front of him.
It truly was possible.
All he had to do was wait for midnight and it would all be over. The world in balance once more and Merlin safe.While Merlin, Arthur and the Round Table knights rides for the Isle of the Blessed to end the terrors of the dorocha raging through their world with their ghostly, ice cold touch and their screams of the unforgiving dead, Gaius, searches through his collection of books of magic, unwilling to accept that Merlin would leave this world, giving himself to the tear between this world and the next, in Arthur’s stead.
When the time comes to it, Gaius willingly gives his name and his breath to the Cailleach and the tear to save him.-
