Milgram failed to put Es to sleep. That failure changes everything.
‘Es’, German for ‘Id’: the part of the psyche ruled by impulse, desire, and instinct. A curious name for one meant to pass judgment. But Milgram never asked the warden to be fair, only to judge with their own stance.
Forced to grow closer to their prisoners, Es finds that their small world was collapsing onto them. Are they truly the judge, or just another prisoner of the system?

Summary
Mikoto found himself in the smoking area more and more often as the days went on. He'd kicked the habit as much as he could, getting by with just vaping at home or on what few breaks he could get, but he'd long given up on the idea of getting back to work anytime soon. It was all still too strange to grasp, being stuck in some magical prison from hell, somehow just humane enough that he couldn't complain. More than that though, he found himself plagued by his own mind.
The days slipped by him, even more than usual. The nights were another story, any time after curfew almost entirely gone, only to wake up in the morning with torn clothes and complaints from Amane about him yelling. They were night terrors, he kept telling himself, something easily explainable, but everything made less and less sense the more he thought about it.

She'd only been gone a few minutes, off to get some water, but the way Mikoto looked when she opened the door very quickly reminded her of what she had been supposed to be doing in the first place. She tensed herself, ready to attack or be attacked, glass of water be damned, but the way he looked at her… This was someone else. He had been frowning quite intensely, tugging at his hair in that way he was wont to do whenever he got particularly overwhelmed, rocking steadily and stiffly. The look in his eyes was one of fear though, not anger. His posture changed entirely as soon as he saw her, trying to act natural even with that petrified expression on his face and the way he still naturally curled into himself. He almost looked like a frightened child.

Mahiru looked at them with big, wet eyes. “But, Es!” She protests, “I just can't believe it… to never fall in love, how awful is that?”
“I don't find it awful.” Es denied. “I find the idea kind of relieving. I have better things to do than fall in love.”
