“Hey, old man, check this out! Look at me now! Bet you never thought you’d see me buying something like this, huh?” Shiki brought the sake closer to the headstone as if it needed a chance to focus. “Since it’s the first alcoholic drink I bought now that I can, I figured I’d share it with you too."
He removed two small cups from his bag. After setting them onto the ground, he opened the sake and carefully poured a little into one. He set that cup onto his father’s grave. Old people get served first, as was tradition. Shiki then poured himself a little in the other cup.
He shut his eyes and clapped his hands together in a silent prayer. When he opened them again he picked up the cup and drank its contents in one gulp. He made an offended face along with an accompanying sound that verged on disgust. Definitely an acquired taste.
“I knew you were weird for liking that stuff so much,” Shiki muttered.
He sat there for a moment as if waiting for the gravestone to respond. It didn’t. It never would. He’d never hear that irritating old man’s voice again, no matter how much he wanted to. Tears pooled in his eyes, and he bowed his head. Shiki sniffled softly. Damn.

For a moment, that’s all there is. Grey light leaking around the curtains, the soft drum of drizzle on the glass, the radiator grumbling in the corner. The flat feels small and warm and theirs.
He lies there, smiling at the ceiling, counting quietly in his head.
One, two, three—
On four, Oscar usually lets out this little grumpy exhale, buries his face deeper into the pillow and mutters something about “five more minutes.”

Will just then found his mouth very dry and a lump set in his throat. Suddenly, all the words in his mouth died and he simply stared straight ahead.

Will forced the lump down his throat as he answered her.
