    Or was she?

    Summary

This series started as just a one-shot to help people with AO3's CSS for making work skins.  Now that I've written a piece on making series (originally for a friend, but then shared to a Facebook group, so I figured why not add it to AO3), I figured that the two really should be linked for tutorial purposes.  I had no plans to do any of this at first, so maybe I'll add more in the future (Collections come to mind, and they're really easy to do).

I don't expect to add further tutorials, but I hadn't expected to write these either.  I'm calling the series complete, but who knows (one thing that keeps nudging me is to take the statistics and show how fics' half-lives vary, for example; another is putting all weird AO3 fixes into one spot).

NB:  If you're wondering, please see How to make and fix a series on AO3 (in this series with the tutorial on CSS work skins for fonts, which made that link become underscored blue ink [assuming that your browser settings, site skin, and third party apps didn't prohibit it]).

As I lay broken and bleeding on the battlefield, I began to wonder about the meaning of it all. I mean, what are we actually fighting for? Are we always destined to lose in some cosmic game? Why do the sides have to be different colors? Why can't the Biskups just be able to hook up for once without the world ending?

The boy’s bottom lip trembled, and Celeste was alarmed to see that he was on the verge of tears. Then another moment passed, and he seemed to swallow this emotion, replacing it with anger. “Nothing,” he bit out, “I was chosen for Eben’s knight and ... was lost.”

The Wars had first been established in a treaty several hundred years ago to join the two warring nations of Alabast and Eben in a final bid for peace. The Council of Elders were in charge of enforcing the treaty, which required the monarchs of Alabast and Eben to meet at a neutral location every five years and play a game of chess, the pieces of which were represented by children - both common and noble - from each of their realms. The winner of the game that year would be awarded their captured pieces. A cultural exchange, the Elders had called it, though more commonly it was understood that the children were to be hostages for peace.

But does it play chess?  While chess is hardly DOOM, there still are some constraints on actually moving things around without JavaScript (though gifbot has some ideas that might render such possible).

    Don't panic! 😉

Time for some in situ RNG aikido.

I can't [yet] offer any definite way to actively play chess on AO3, and so, in lieu of such, I offer you 256 preconfigured static-display chess puzzles, one selected randomly per refresh, with random black or white to move, using only HTML and CSS, no offsite JS.

There are also some secret messages from the BBEG upon :hover on desktop Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and TOR [in a WIN 11 environment], or upon :touch on iPhone Safari (Android Chrome... is iffy, because Android : it has both worked and failed for me, so no guarantees).  Lemme know how it is on Mac / 'nix!

Part CSS extravaganza demo, and part How To for leveraging RNG for stunning results.

Can't see this in the Testing_ground collection (at least not in Edge), where it's just one more of the unclickable Mystery Works even though my main account invited my Testing_Account to co-author it (and having earlier invited this account to be an invitee, a mod, and even an owner of the collection, none of the works had been visible to this account then, either), but I can see it by pasting the test-fic's URL into the address bar.  Interesting.

Wow, had to edit the bookmark in order to drop in the chess puzzle test-fic's link directly, because even the bookmark is an unclickable link for the Testing_Account! 😲

Invited my Testing_Account to co-author another test-fic and accept that one, just to see the difference(s), as upon accepting it I found that the other one (still in that Unrevealed Collection) was then perfectly visible and clickable.
