Summary
Bucky, Jeff and Knuckles are held in Hydra base. After many escape attempts, they start to lose hope, only for the newly formed Avengers to break in and get them out. Now they have to figure out how to navigate a modern life with old fashioned sensibilities and broken, morphed bodies.
In this version, the Avengers form before "Breakout". Just minus the Hulk. Don't worry, though. He'll appear in later chapters.

In the war, Bucky and Toro always had each other's backs. They both knew how difficult it was to be kids in the middle of a battle field, written off by the adults as being too young to truly understand the things going on around them. They understood each other in a way no one else could.
Now, finding himself thrust in a new universe, Bucky is determined to be there when Toro needs him the most. It doesn't matter if their history has suddenly changed. When is a friend is in trouble, you don't turn your back on them.

At least, he hadn’t felt like it. And certainly, those in charge of him never treated him as one. After all, who would hand a child a knife and a rifle and tell him to kill for them if they truly saw him as one to protect and serve?

This is an absolute hidden gem among Marvel fics. It's so beautiful, and I think it captures Namor's POV wonderfully. The relationship between Bucky, Namor and Steve here is so intriguing and bittersweet and heartbreaking. There's something about wartime desperation and homosexual taboo that makes the trysts so compelling, and I didn't know whether to be sad or happy for them in the end.
It sorta gave me CMBYN vibes, I guess.
Accidental feelings, indeed.
