    Wei Wuxian appeared beside them. He took in the sight of A-Ning’s corpse in her arms. He might have said something or he might have remained silent. Wen Qing couldn’t really think straight anymore. She felt as if she was being ripped apart from the inside.

    She lost consciousness.

    A moment later, Wen Qing shuddered awake again. She wasn’t inside the ravine any longer. She still wore the same set of robes, but somehow, they were completely dry. She was back in Yunmeng. Her brother was still alive somewhere out there.

    Trapped inside a time loop, Wen Qing has one mission: succeed in keeping her brother alive. If along the way she gains a second brother, well.

    That feels like it means something, but Wen Qing just isn’t sure what.

    He sounds way too casual for having abandoned their toddler cousin at daycare today. Wen Qing is trying not to freak out.

    “Why didn’t you pick up A-Yuan today?” Wen Qing perches her phone between her ear and her shoulder. “I’m at the hospital Wen Ning, I have been for hours. Did the daycare call? Who picked up A-Yuan today?”

    “You're still at the hospital? And no? Maybe Wei Ying picked him up.”

    Wen Qing’s rapid thoughts come to a screeching halt.

    After going missing for a year, a worse-for-wear Wei Ying shows up on Wen Qing's doorstep. She makes him stay, even though it adds a mentally ill young man to her odd mix of family. She doesn't regret it, but she still gets scared when Wei Ying accidentally becomes A-Yuan's caretaker for the night when he is not able to handle the task. Or so she thinks.

    She would’ve expected the softness to have been beaten out of him by everything that had happened. She knew it would have been beaten out of her, if she were in his shoes. In some ways, he had hardened up. He was harsher, colder, more pragmatic. It fit him, made him seem more mature as a sect leader. And yet, by some strange miracle, she was allowed to see beyond the facade of Jiang Wanyin, sect leader. Hidden beneath those hard layers was a boy that still cared with such an intensity it would someday tear him apart.

    For reasons she could not fathom, he shed that shell around her, and trusted her with the soft interior. She did not feel like she should be trusted with this vulnerable core of his person, but to explain why would be to change everything, so she took the vulnerability he handed her and did her best not to shake.

However, it seemed like living as a concubine here wasn’t too hard as long as she kept to herself and survived. If she survived, her family would be alive. 

    That was enough.

    She just didn't expect to build a friendship with the most respected concubine and by extension, a weird couple who liked to flaunt their love.

    Summary

    Modern WangXian AU. I like treading close to canon - out of respect for the original and, especially in this case, for the emotional power of its tragedy - but here I'm transposing it into a mildly-dystopian modern context. There's some worldbuilding in most of the stories in this series; not in any particular order, but as it evolved in my mind. Sometimes I repeat elements of it to enable a story to be read as a standalone narrative. There'll be some inconsistencies and continuity gaps because I write my stories as they come to mind, not necessarily in a planned sequence. There are also distinct sub-arcs in the main setting of this AU, and not all of them are connected.
